When does STEP begin?

STEP begins after you’ve successfully completed the hiring process and are officially hired by the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. If there is time before your assigned academy class begins, you’ll start your career in STEP.

Do I get paid while I'm in STEP?

Yes. STEP participants are full-time Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office employees and begin earning their salary and county benefits before attending the academy.

How long will I be in STEP?

The length of the STEP Program depends on when you’re hired and when the next academy class begins. Some recruits may participate for only a few weeks, while others may spend a couple of months in STEP before transitioning to the academy. During this time, you’ll already be earning a salary and benefits while building your physical readiness, learning about the Sheriff’s Office, and preparing for academy success. Because academy classes typically begin every 3 to 4 months, the amount of time in STEP will vary based on your hire date.

Will I attend the academy with the other STEP recruits?

Yes. Once the next academy class begins, STEP recruits transition together into the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy.

What if I'm hired just before the academy starts?

If your academy class is scheduled to begin shortly after you’re hired, you may transition directly into the academy with little or no time in STEP.
