Career
Honor Guard
Established in 1982, the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard serves as a formal representative of the agency. The team participates in ceremonies, funerals, graduations, parades, judge investitures, and special events throughout Fairfax County and the Washington, D.C. area.
Motor Unit
The Motor Unit supports civil process, traffic management, enforcement, incident response, and community relations events. Deputies selected for the unit complete at least 80 hours of Basic Motor Operations School and continue annual training to maintain certification.
Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT)
The Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team, also known as SERT, is trained for high-risk and emergency situations. The team supports agency operations when other methods have been exhausted and may assist with disturbances, high-risk trials, transports, searches, evacuations, and other critical incidents.
Bike Team
The Bike Team supports law-enforcement-related services for the agency. Deputies may patrol the Fairfax County Judicial Complex, assist at special events, provide a security presence, support traffic control, and represent the Sheriff’s Office at fairs, bike safety demonstrations, and community events.
Crisis Negotiation Team
The Crisis Negotiation Team responds to hostage and barricade situations involving the Sheriff’s Office. Team members work to protect hostages, bystanders, deputies, and suspects while supporting peaceful resolutions whenever possible. Members complete a 40-hour basic hostage negotiations course.
Crisis Intervention Team
Crisis Intervention Team deputies support mental health-related responses involving the Sheriff’s Office within the Adult Detention Center and the community. Deputies assist during crisis situations, support safe transports, and help connect individuals with appropriate services when possible.
Department of Code Compliance (DCC)
Deputies assigned to the Department of Code Compliance provide civil and criminal law enforcement support. They assist inspectors, help maintain safety during investigations, support neighborhood complaint processes, and serve as a liaison during complex situations involving residents, inspectors, and county agencies.
Sheriff’s Intelligence Unit
The Sheriff’s Intelligence Unit helps enhance the security of the Adult Detention Center and the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors. The unit gathers intelligence, works criminal cases, identifies threat groups, and partners with local, state, and federal agencies.
Academy Instructor
Academy instructors provide entry-level and mandated training at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. They help train members of the Sheriff’s Office and partner public safety agencies, supporting the professional development of recruits and in-service personnel.
Range Instructor
Firearms instructors provide training for recruits, deputies, and police officers. Their work includes entry-level firearms training, marksmanship instruction, remedial training, and mandated firearms training for member agencies of the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy.
EVOC Instructor
Emergency Vehicle Operations Course instructors train recruits and in-service officers in the safe operation of emergency vehicles. Instruction includes driving skills, techniques, operational principles, and legal considerations related to emergency vehicle use in public safety work.
Peer Support Team
The Peer Support Team supports the mental health and well-being of sworn and nonsworn staff members and their families. The team is led by a licensed professional counselor and is accredited through the Virginia Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Therapy Dog Support
Bailey, the Sheriff’s Office’s therapy dog, is a valued member of the Peer Support Team. With a calm and comforting presence, Bailey helps support staff well-being and resilience as part of the agency’s internal support efforts.
Community
Child Safety Seat Team
The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office Child Safety Seat Team provides free child safety seat inspections to the community. Our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, comprised of both sworn deputies and professional staff, help parents and caregivers ensure child safety seats are properly installed and provide education on keeping children safe while traveling.
Child Identification Program
The Child Identification Program provides families with identification cards for their children at free community events. Deputies, reserve deputies, and non-sworn personnel fingerprint, photograph, measure, and record parent-provided information, then give the completed card to the parent for safekeeping.
Crime Prevention Unit
The Crime Prevention Unit supports community safety through threat and safety assessments, educational seminars, and outreach with businesses, places of worship, community groups, and local organizations. The unit also participates in National Night Out to help strengthen crime prevention partnerships.
Project Lifesaver
Project Lifesaver serves Fairfax County children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other cognitive impairments who may be prone to wandering. Specially trained deputies use transmitter technology to help locate missing participants and support caregivers.
