Internship Program
The Sheriff’s Office sponsors an in-depth internship program that provides hands-on experience for those pursuing careers in criminal justice, psychology, social work, and related fields. Interns gain valuable insight into the correctional and law enforcement environment while learning about behavioral health services, re-entry programming, and our Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) initiatives that support inmate rehabilitation and successful community reintegration.
Internship Program
Interns will have the opportunity to tour, observe, and learn about the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, Courthouse, and Criminal Justice Academy. Interns may also do a Civil Enforcement ride-along.
Minimum Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older (under 18 accepted with approval)
- Must not have ever committed, or been involved in, any act that would constitute a felony or serious misdemeanor
- Pass a background check
- United States citizen

Application Process
Send an email to SHF-Internship@fairfaxcounty.gov stating your interest in an internship
Submit a cover letter and resume (optional)
Submit a written recommendation from school or academic program (if needed)
If you will be receiving academic credit for participation, submit a copy of the academic requirements for the course
If you are conditionally accepted into the internship program, you will be sent a detailed application to complete, and you will be subject to a background investigation
